Parcel Shipping to Australia

Parcel shipping to Australia?   There is no need to fret about shipping something to your family and friends in the land down under—it is a relatively easy process, given that you follow the guidelines.  There are a number of private companies that send your parcel to any part of the world, but a cheaper alternative is your local postal system.  If you are shipping from the UK to Australia, using the Royal Mail can save you around half the price a private shipping company quoted for your package.  Before you rush to your local post office with the parcel you want to ship to Australia, you may want to consider the following things:

  • The contents of your package.  What exactly are you shipping to Australia?  Common items are foodstuff, documents, retail goods, and personal belongings.  Check the shipping regulations imposed by your postal system regarding the things you cannot ship out of the country.  The Australia Post has restrictions against lithium batteries—but will accept parcels containing them if the batteries are inside laptop computers, MP3 players, mobile phones, cameras, watches, clocks, calculators, or other electric goods for consumers.  If you can, avoid shipping alcoholic beverages, items with high heat sensitivity, substances that can combust spontaneously (chemicals or compounds that can burst into flames when it comes contact to the air, like zinc or magnesium powder), and other toxic chemicals that may pose harm to the health of the people who will handle your parcel.  The Australia Post offers a comprehensive list of the items they will not permit to enter the country.

  • Do you have the complete address for the recipient?  The complete address, including the postal code, of the recipient of your parcel is very important.  There might be a couple of people with the same name with the same neighborhood or postal code, so it is essential that you have the completeand correct address before you ship your package.  If you are unsure of the postal code, you can ask at the counter or use online postal code finders—but only if you have the complete address.  This knowledge will save you a lot of grief—your package may end up on the wrong address and the recipient unable to retrieve it.

  • The address labels should be legible.  If you are writing the address labels by hand, make sure that you are writing it in block letters and in dark (preferably black) ink.  Avoid brightly colored ink in pink, yellow, orange, or silver, especially if you are using white paper.  Machine-printed labels should bear readable, evenly spaced fonts like Arial or Times New Roman. Especially if your parcel is coming from somewhere far away EG: shipping from the UK to Australia.

  • Cut-off dates. Post offices have shipping or mailing cut-off dates, especially around the holidays. If you want your parcel to reach the recipient before Christmas, check the last day of shipping offered by the postal system.  These dates are often announced beforehand, and some postal systems use a fixed calendar for their cut-off dates used for years.
