Shipping from UK to Australia

Shipping from UK to Australia

If you are a UK resident wanting to ship something to Australia, the Royal Mail is a cheap, convenient, and reliable way to send your parcel to the Land Down Under.  The Royal Mail offers almost half the rates of private shipping companies with competitive delivery speeds. Its a good idea to compare the shipping to Australia cost.

Preparing your parcel

Before you seal up your parcel for shipping, there are items that the Royal Mail would not allow some items to ship out of the country.  There are also specific contents that the Australia Post, your parcel’s destination, will not allow to enter their country.   Items with corrosive, oxidizing, and combustible components (with very few exceptions) are not allowed for shipment.  Bank notes, coins, and jewelry may be allowed but only by a special agreement, such as a consignment of the goods, with the post office.

Putting on the address label is also an important thing to remember when shipping a parcel.  The address of the recipient (as well as your own address, should the Royal Mail be unable to deliver the parcel) should be written in block letters using dark ink. When using labels printed from a machine, use fonts that are readable and spaced evenly, like Arial, Century Gothic, or Courier.  Uncertain of the recipient’s postal code?  No problem—you can look it up online or ask an officer at your local post office, but always remember to include it at the end of the recipient’s address.

Shipping costs and options

You should weigh the parcel at home before heading to the post office for shipping parcels to Australia.  Use a scale you would use in the kitchen for small packages, and for bigger ones, a bathroom scale should work fine.  You should have an idea on how heavy your parcel is so you can quickly estimate the cost.

How are you shipping your parcel to Australia?  If you are just mailing something to a family member, a friend, or a colleague, then you might qualify as a ‘personal’ customer.  Shipping goods to clients living in Australia may qualify for ‘small and medium business’ or a ‘corporate and public sector’ customers.  If your business has less than 250 employees, you can qualify for a small or medium business, while 250 or more employees automatically qualify you for a corporate account.

There are also options for Special Delivery and regular delivery.  Of course, a Special Delivery will cost more but will get your parcel to the recipient as soon as possible, but if the parcel’s delivery is not urgent, the regular option makes for cheap shipping to Australia.  The Royal Mail also offers an online cost calculator that you can use to have an approximate amount for the parcel.

If there is personal or sensitive information inside your shipment, EG: shipping belongings to Australia, you might want to inform the person assessing your package so you can be offered an option that will exclude the parcel from postal inspection.  This option may cost extra, but it is well worth the additional fee to protect the privacy of the information.
