Hamilton Information :
Situated in the middle of the "Golden Horseshoe" against the great slope of Niagara, Hamilton has
a population of 322,000, making it the ninth largest city in Canada. Hamilton's climate is generally
continental (warm summers and cold winters) and is influenced by its location to the Great Lakes.
The escarpment shields the lower part of the city from southerly winds, making the downtown
cooler than the south end. The city is known as a Steel Town, supplying steel for the car
manufacturing sector centred around Toronto. Stelco and Dofasco remain the two largest
employers (private sector) in the city. Over the past 20 years, the city has been working on a
program of improving the quality of life for its residents (known as Greening). The Bruce Trail today
covers 776 kilometres from Queenston to Tobermory. The city is also home to the Royal Botanical
Gardens and Iroquoia Heights Conservation Area. Hamilton is close to both Toronto and the US
border at Queenston, making it easy for industry and travellers.
