Kitchener Information :
Kitchener is positioned in the heartland of Southern Ontario, also referred to as "Canada's
Technology Triangle", it accommodates around 500,000 residents. The community is comprised of
the urban centres of Cambridge, Guelph, Kitchener, and Waterloo. All of these cities are close to
each other and Highway 401, the main road between Toronto and Detroit. The city started off as a
600,000 acre reserve for Indians loyal to the King in the War of 1812. They sold a section of land,
which was then subdivided. The first people to inhabit the area were German-speaking
Mennonites from Pennsylvania who liked the farmland. Later in the 1800s more Germans arrived,
who were mostly tradesmen and merchants. This new town then called Berlin, in 1916, during the
First World War, renamed itself Kitchener. The community has several universities including the
University of Waterloo, University of Guelph, Wilfrid Laurier University and Conestoga College. The
manufacturing trade employs about 60,000 people in the area. Today, Kitchener is best known as
home to J.M. Schneider and Research in Motion (creators of the Blackberry PDA). Kitchener is less
than one hour from Toronto, Canada's largest city, and a couple of hours from the American Cities
of Detroit and Buffalo.
