Thunder Bay Information :
Thunder Bay was originally two cities, the fur trading post of Fort William and the great lakes port of
Port Arthur, which combined in 1970. It is one of the world's largest grain ports, joining the massive
prairie wheat fields with the Great Lakes shipping network. The city is also a main centre for the
area's forest industries. Thunder Bay lies at the western end of Lake Superior (which is why it is
otherwise known as the "Lakehead") and is at the centre of Canada. It has a population of about
109,000 and is Ontario's tenth largest city. Thunder Bay has a rich ethnic mix, offering a variety of
cultural and recreational opportunities. It has a well-educated workforce and is home to
Confederation College and Lakehead University. The city held the 1981 Canada Summer Games,
which provided excellent recreational facilities to the community. There are a wide range of sports
and recreational activities on offer in both summer and winter, including the highest ski hills
between the Laurentians and the Rockies
