Cologne is Germany’s 4th largest city, after Belin, Munich and Hamburg. It is one of the oldest cities in Germany and was founded by the Romans. The city is situated on the River Rhine and is known in Germany as “Koln”. It is a beautiful place and as one of Germany’s most historic, it has endless sightseeing opportunities.
Many of the popular sights are close to the breathtaking Cathedral (Kolner Dom), this Cathederal took around 600 years to build and is truly spectacular. There are also numerous monuments from over the past 2000 years, such as the Roman Dionysus Mosaic, The Gurzenich Hall and the Overstolzenhaus. There are also modern attractions such as the Opera House and Media Park. Another popular sight is the house of 4711 (the origional Eau de Cologne), the origional scent was called Aqua Mirabilis on the basis of its refreshing and stimulating effect.
Carnival season runs from 11th November each year, along with a main event aptly named “three mad days” that takes place around Easter time, this attracts over a million revelers. Cologne is a beer city, and their own beer is named Kolcsh. the city has a mild climate, with the summers typically wet and humid, often with a cool breeze.
