Gothenburg is set on the west coast of Sweden facing Aalborg in Denmark, directly north of Copenhagen. King Gustav II Adolf founded the city in 1621, but it was developed largely by Dutch and German city planners and canal experts.
The region is one of the most popular tourist areas in Scandinavia. It is an old and exciting cultural area. There are ruins that provide proof that people were living here as far back as 8,000 years ago. Gothenburg was intended to act as Sweden´s gateway to the west.
The area around the mouth of the River Göta had been an important trading centre since the 12th century. The city was built in Dutch style, with streets and manmade canals in a well-designed system and a large square, now called Gustaf Adolfs Torg, next to the Large Canal.
Surrounded by walls, bastions and a moat, Gothenburg was one of the most well defended fortresses in Northern Europe. Three of the fortresses that were built outside the city: Skansen Kronan, Skansen Lejonet and the New Älvsborg Fortress, still stand today. The city changed quite dramatically during the 19th century. The fortresses were demolished and this made way for the Kungsparken Park and the Horticultural Society. The city has since expanded and with a population of more than 600,000 inhabitants, Gothenburg has everything a modern city could offer, it also has a very welcoming atmosphere.
If you’re looking for a city that has a rich cultural feel with theatre and music at its heart and with fantastic culinary gems galore, then Gothenburg is a great choice for relocating. The Poseidon statue presides imposingly over Götaplatsen square, the city’s cultural centre. Many of Gothenburg’s 17 museums, 25 theatres and 38 cinemas are located nearby. It also plays home to some of the best festivals. The best way to explore Gothenburg is on the open topped Padden boats which sail through the city and out into the harbour although bikes are readily available to hire or you can always see the city on foot. In the winter months Gothenburg becomes a spectacular wonderland, with decorations, lights and a magical Christmassy mood.
Not to mention the city’s Christmas Market. Children can enjoy reindeer rides while the adults shop for ornaments and all types of Nordic souvenirs. There’s even an ice skating rink for anyone brave enough to show off their skating skills. Gothenburg is blessed with a mild climate. It also offers warmer temperatures than other cities located within the same geographical position. Summer in Gothenburg is warm and sunny, and although winter can be chilly, it is not as cold as other places in Sweden.
