Stockholm was founded in 1250 and lies on the East Coast of Sweden between Lake Malaren and the Baltic Sea. It is not only one of the most beautiful European Cities, but also one of the most visited in the Nordic countries. The City centre is built on 14 islands connected by bridges, it is aptly nicknamed “Venice of the North “as a large percentage of its area is made up of water. Stockholm has many statues and around 70 museums.
One of which is the Stockholm Stadsmuseum, this is dedicated to the town’s history. Another museum that is a well worth a visit when in Stockholm is Skansen, this is an open air museum devoted to historical Sweden. If you feel like some shopping followed by dinner then take a walk along Fjallgatan, this is the most traditional street in Stockholm and has many restaurants to sample, with Cafes and shops aplenty. Another street that proves popular with residents and tourists alike is Norrmalmstorg, this street has lots of fancy shops and a market, and it is also featured in the Swedish version of Monopoly.
The flea market at Hotorget is great when looking for items just that little bit different, you are able to pick up items of jewellery, clothes and antiques at very reasonable prices. The Archipelago is another “must do”, this is a breathtaking place that has a rare collection of exotic birds and wildlife. Stockholm also offers wonderful opera and drama performances at the Royal Theatre. It is said to be one of Europe’s most renowned venues. The jazz festival attracts tourists who love music. And the Stockholm Pride is the largest in the Nordic countries.
Public transport in the city of Stockholm is run by the Storstockholms Lokaltrafik, city traffic is increasing at an alarming rate with more than 270,000 private cars used. A congestion tax has been introduced in the city with an intention to reduce congestion and improve the traffic flow. There are three regional rail services, a number of bus routes and regular ferry services to Aland Island, Turku and Helsinki, Estonia, Latvia, Tallinn and Riga. The Stockholm Central station provides train services to many towns in Sweden and to Copenhagen and Oslo.
Despite its northern location, Stockholm enjoys a relatively moderate climate with warm summers. Daylight during those months lasts up to 16 hours, while winters are somewhat chilly and characterized by shorter days
