Shipping Sweden

When shipping to Sweden or to any country at all, one must make a thorough research of the country’s importation laws in order to avoid inconveniences and unnecessary expenses.   For smooth and hassle-free shipping, one must take note of the basic dos and don’ts in shipping to Sweden.

First, make a list of all the documents required or needed.  Make sure that these are properly, honestly, accurately and completely filled out.   One important document is the list of all the items contained in the shipment as this will be used as basis by Customs officers when the shipment arrives in Sweden.

It is important to take note that used valuables and personal effects are not taxable as long as these goods and valuables have been in the possession of the shipper for a minimum of one year.   Sweden also has a list of restricted items.  Knowing the requirements and the conditions of the entry of restricted items will greatly expedite the shipping process and the release of the items.  For instance, it is essential to know that prescription is required for the entry of medicines.  Also,  if one wants to ship firearms, ammunition, explosives, fireworks and weapons, they must be accompanied with an import license when they are released to the owner.  Import licenses can only be issued by the police in Sweden.  Shipments which contain alcoholic drinks or tobacco product will usually cost the shipper more since Sweden charges steep taxes for importation of these products so as to discourage their massive importation to the country.  One may also ship a used vehicle and this is duty-free provided that the vehicle was purchased, acquired and used by the owner for more than a year.  The vehicle must be supported by documents such as the certificate of registration of the vehicle, the purchase invoice that includes the price of the vehicle and the place and date of its purchase, the insurance policy from the country where the vehicle came from and the interim insurance policy which is issued by a Swedish insurance company.   An importation of a used vehicle is also burdened with the condition that it cannot be sold in Sweden within a year of its importation.  Only one car for every person is allowed to be imported.   As for shipping pets, an import permit issued by the National Board of Agriculture is required together with a thorough health examination conducted by a veterinarian.

One must also know the items which are prohibited when shipping to Sweden.   These banned or prohibited items include switchblades, narcotics and drugs, endangered species, ivory, and skins of certain animals, to name a few.

In order to ensure that all requirements and documents have been taken cared of, it is advisable to get the services of a shipping company which frequently handles shipping to Sweden as they are the ones who are most familiar with the country’s shipping and importation policies.  The internet is a good place to look for a shipping company.  Make sure to check for feedback and reviews from past customers in order to ascertain which among the various companies is the best.
