    About Greece

Greece was a part of the Ottoman Empire until it claimed independence in 1829. The country was invaded in 1941 and was ruled by Nazi Germany until October 1944. A civil war followed the liberation, and it was not until 1975 that Greece reverted to democratic ruling and the monarchy was abolished. Greece is often referred to as the ‘cradle of western civilisation’, with its long history and a heritage that influenced the whole of Europe, North America and the Middle East. Situated in the south of the Balkan Peninsula, Greece is bordered by Turkey in the east, and Albania, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Bulgaria in the north.

Greece has the Aegean Sea running along the eastern and southern coasts and the Ionian Sea in the west. The country has the tenth longest coastline in the world. Mountains and hills are dotted throughout. The summer in Greece sees many festivities and events being held. One of the most important is the summer Hellenic Festival. Greek cuisine is gastronomy of delight; try their famous grilled octopus or salads. Try Souvlaki (meat grilled on a skewer) served with fresh Tzatziki (a dip with yoghurt, olive oil, garlic and cucumbers), Paidakia (rack of lamb) and Spetzofai (grilled sausage, onions and pepper in wine), all of which are specialities of Greece.

    Weather in Greece

Greece is a large country so the climate does differ. For the most part, the weather follows a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild rainy winters. The country receives a great deal of sunshine, for which it is famous. There are, however, varying weather patterns across the country dictated by the distance from the coast. The high mountains, for example, have a very different climate to the islands. Inland areas see more definite seasons than coastal areas, the south being hotter than the north.
